Logitech Squeezebox Wi-Fi Internet Radio and Wireless Music Player Review

After helping a neighbor buy and set up one of these a few years ago, I've been anxiously awaiting purchasing one myself. For many years, I've been using an Audiotron, which is a digital music player that was great for its time, but it was discontinued years ago, and the Squeezebox offered more features, including access to the excellent Pandora music service.

Adding to the attraction of its many features, it also has a stellar reputation for audio quality and an active support community on the Squeezebox forums. There are many instances where audiophiles are using Squeezebox devices to play lossless music files through high-end equipment; a situation that years ago would have been done through a dedicated and very expensive CD transport. Slim Devices (now purchased by Logitech) even designed the Squeezebox Transporter to cater to that crowd, offering a premium-priced product that was based upon this Squeezebox hardware.

When I had the chance to purchase the Squeezebox for a very good price, I didn't hesitate, and I'm very glad that I made the purchase!

A primary difference between the Audiotron and the Squeezebox is that the latter requires the SqueezeCenter software to be running on a host computer in order to provide anything more than Internet Radio. I wasn't thrilled about the idea of having something like that taking up computer resources, so I used this as an opportunity to purchase the Netgear ReadyNAS Duo 2-Bay (Diskless) Desktop Network Storage RND2000 that also provides the ability to run SqueezeCenter along with hosting the files. Now, I don't need to have a computer running 24/7 and I don't have to deal with a software package running on my primary PC.

The tradeoff is that the ReadyNAS is somewhat underpowered, and the response time of the web interface is a little slower than I'd like. Hopefully, a software update will improve that situation, even if just a little.

The Squeezebox is an audio-only device, so you will not find a video connection on its back panel. Control is in the form of a standard IR remote control and the vacuum flourescent display, which is very good quality. I actually prefer to the use the web interface, even if it's a little on the slow side through the ReadyNAS. I'm looking forward to trying the iPhone app for controlling it. The flexibility that there are so many different ways to control the Squeezebox is a testament to the technical prowess behind the designers of the product.

Even though I'm glad that I don't have to turn on my TV to control the Squeezebox, I have to admit that I'd really like to be able to use an on-screen GUI to navigate my music library, change settings, and see cover art and visualizations while music is playing. Such additions would likely make the player more expensive and out of reach for many people, though.

There are so many capabilities of this device, I haven't looked through them all and experimented with them. Tops among them are iTunes library integration, where it appears that I could access my iTunes playlists for a more seamless and integrated experience.

By far, I get the most use out of the Pandora music service. Pandora is an online service that allows you to specify an artist or a song that you like and it will go out and find similar artists and songs. You can create multiple stations, so that you can listen to music to match your mood, from Johnny Cash Country to 80's rock to relaxing piano music from the likes of Jim Brickman. You can access Pandora on your computer, but nothing beats the convenience being able to pipe that music throughout your house!

Pandora access was the primary reason I wanted a Squeezebox, and I'm very happy with it. The only thing I would like is a way to access "thumbs-up" and "thumbs-down" ratings more easily from the remote.

The advantage of having a centralized server software program is that you can add more Squeezebox devices and control them from the software and even synchronize them for simultaneous playback if you wish. I bought a used 1st generation Squeezebox and it works great to access my entire music collection as well as Pandora, etc.

Having the Squeezebox allows us to enjoy more music more often. We get more use from the music library we have, and listening to Pandora opens us up to artists and music we may not have heard otherwise. While you can attach an iPod to your stereo system to play your music, it's not the same as having a device dedicated to the task. The sound quality is fantastic, there are more features than most people will know what to do with, and it's a great addition to our entertainment system!

Of all the negative reviews I've read so far seems to be with the dropped connections. I have not experienced any of the dropped connections, maybe because I prefer to listen to my own music collection stored on my PC. I rarely listen to online music & when I do, everything was fine.
I got really lucky & found a deal on the Logitech website where they were selling dented box units for only 7.00, that is over 0 off the retail price of 9. Actually the unit itself is brand new & the only thing that was damaged was the box itself.
I have to say, so far I love this unit. The ability to access my music files from anywhere in the house is awesome. Sure the SONOS is great, but you will need to drop at least 00 to get started. Plus I trust the brand Logitech more than I do with Sonos.

I was able to download an app for my MOTO DROID where I was able to control the unit from my phone, so you Apple people are not the only one that can do that with your phones. For those that want to free your music from wires at a very reasonable price, I strongly recommend this...

I have a windows xp computer in my finished basement / man cave with a few hundred gigs of music sitting on the music drive. It connects to my router through a wireless G connection & I have the squeezebox boom in my master bedroom on the night stand. It's 100% perfect for a bedroom or kitchen.

I have worked as a sound reinforcement engineer, and dj in the past, so I'm picky about sound quality. It doesn't need to be 100% accurate, but it had better not have any annoying rattles, and when I put on some sub 100hz heavy drum & bass music like Dj? Acucrack or Enduser, I expect to hear the bass all the way down to the bottom. I was skeptical that speakers so small could deliver. The week prior to purchasing my squeezebox, I purchased a set of m-audio audiophile monitor speakers which are 1 inch larger & have a higher quality class of amplifier than this device, and I was let down by their bass performance. I have to say, despite seemingly common sense and my skepticism, I was 110% blown away by the quality of sound that they packed into these little speakers. The squeezebox boom has the best bass reproduction of any small system. I managed to get it on closeout at a major retailer's bankruptcy liquidation sale for 50% off. After having it for a couple months, I would gladly pay full price to replace it if it ever broke.

If anybody has sound problems with this device, then it's a problem with the source material, period.

My only gripe is the lack of usb / flash card reader. Without one, the device doesn't seem 100% reliable as an alarm clock. There's just too many things that could fail if using it as an alarm clock without one.

That & wireless config was annoying. I vaguely remember having to convert the password from decimal to hexidecimal in order to get it to work.

Most electronic hardware is a snap to set up, why waste time reading the manuals. However the Transporter is different in that respect. The brief manual included with the unit is out of date regarding computer software names and links. I was thrown at first getting my pc server to release the data being read. Adding a few custom settings in my (C.A.)software firewall remedied that problem. The firewall settings are actually mentioned in the manual....go figure? So I cannot stress strongly enough to (RTMD!...Read The Manual Dummy!)

There is some very knowledgable info about the Transformer at wikipedia.org, the Logitech site is useful for basic system software and a few FAQ's. Do yourself a favor and write down all ip settings for future reference. The use groups at wikipedia are where you'll find the fun stuff. Start a folder on your PC and save all links to it.

Confused by what I've just written, than you'll need a trusted friend with a bit above average computer skills and a free afternoon, or be prepaired to pay someone to do your setup for you. If either of these is going to be the case than you might want to reconsider purchasing this unit. This system is not designed for the impatient.

As with most all high-end gear, source is very important (GIGO). I've noticed nuances unheard before in a number
of my chosen reference recordings, as well as previously unnoticed distortions. Audio listening being subjective makes one wonder if hearing such is due to the critical listening of the moment or the new gear. Or could it be that we desire to hear new subtleties after dropping a decent chunk of change on a new toy. Is it a combination of these things or none of them. From where I sit I'm going with the new box and a bit higher resolution included therein. It makes the fun, funner, the good, gooder and the hey! I never noticed Coltrane bumping the mic stand on that or was that a squeek from Charlie Byrd's chair. To me its akin to putting a new stylus on your favorite cartridge.

The Transformer runs on an open source platform and some of the the tweaks written by use group members are nice additions to the unit. My wife really enjoys having the local weather data available at a glance. Before you get into the tweaks have the overall system operation down pretty well. I've found it best to backup the PC settings before doing any tweaking to be able to undo easily.

The remote that comes with the Transformer does not have a display and is line of sight only. This can be annoying for general listening. After a few weeks I went ahead and bought a Squeezebox Duet system to gain a remote with display and non line of sight control. I put the Duet receiver out in my workshop. This really allows you to do some cool stuff, you can sync the music on the players or have them run independently. This also allows you to use the remote controller as a third unit via it's 1/8" headphone jack or with adapter cables to plug it into another system as well. It can also be in sync. with the other units or independent of them. The Transformer remote takes standard batteries, the Squeezebox remote
is rechargable with station include. The Squeezebox remote is also very customizable in both function and appearance. Adding the Squeezebox unit did cost more money, however the ability to program and operate the Transformer was greatly increased with this upgrade to the system.

It is also possible to program many system settings of the Transporter via your computer, your offered plenty of built in redundancy. You have your choice of using the front panel buttons, the remote control or the computer interface. It is possible to program and control music via computer, plus compatability with WinAmp. There is a Java based software emulator that some may like also. The unit auto updates it's own firmware, software seems to be updated on a regular basis too.

I'm really not going to get into the web audio streaming functions. There are limitless choices here both free and pay to play. Your dealing with low bit-rate streams in most cases, there is quite a good world wide station search function
to use. I've used the optical line in feature to do a bit of A/B testing between CD's and Lossless streams and really have heard no discernable difference in sound quality between them. There are also options that will connect you to web based music databases, Amazon.com, and also Bio and Discog search abilities plus plenty more bells and whistles to boot.

It is very hard to not go on and on about the Transporter, as mentioned it is a piece of gear that demands patience. Being somewhat past the half-century mark I may not fully utilize some of the available functions offered herein. I do however thoroughly appreciate having those choices made available. To be able to either Set It and Forget It, or to be transported into an entirely new audio adventure.

I have had this product for about a month. I had the original squeezebox and wanted to add this controller (it came out one month after I had purchased the original squeezebox). It took me less than 10 minutes to set up and has worked extemely well for the first month. Occasionally, it will drop the signal when I have put it down for a while, but it takes less than 30 seconds for it to find the system again. I am very happy with the product and would recommend it to others. I use it with a range of up to 100 feet from the wireless router.

Logitech Wireless Music System for PC Review

Let me start off by saying that I have several Logitech devices in my home. I have the DiNovo Edge wireless keyboard, a wireless trackman trackball, a marble mouse trackball for my computer at work, and I have this neat little device (the wireless music system)that came out in my time of need.
I first bought this about 5 or 6 years ago when I wanted to play my downloaded music on my stereo system in my living room without having to burn it to a CD first. It worked great for a while, until it started to show it's age and Logitech stopped supporting the software about 2 or 3 years ago. I had to download some "wireless keyboard support" plug-in for Winamp in order to be able to use the remote with that program. The only reason it gets a rating of 4 instead of five is because I noticed how outdated this was when I set up my first wireless network in my home. I believe the signal from my wireless router has a tendency to interfere with this unit, causing the music to frequently cut out. However, it may only be because of the distance between the transmitter and receiver, and that there is a wall or two in the way. Other than that, this is a great little system to have.
Logitech has since then come out with the Wireless DJ system, and more recently, the Squeezebox. I'm not sure how the latter system works because I have no desire to pay the price for any of those units. I am interested in upgrading to the Wireless DJ system, but I have read somewhere that Logitech stopped supporting software upgrades for that as well (if I am wrong, then someone please tell me).
As I was saying, there are many new systems out there that let you play music wirelessly from your computer to whatever source you wish as long as you have the money to invest. Many of them are wi-fi based using your wireless router, but again, I have no experience with them. Logitech is a great company producing many useful devices, and I will continue to be a loyal customer for years to come.

Logitech Squeezebox Radio Review

I purchased the squeezebox radio to replace my zune speaker system.

I bought an Ipod touch and wanted to buy an new speaker system for it. I ended up stumbeling upon the Squeezebox radio. It gives you intenet radio using your internet connection (wired or wireless router) without the computer middle man.

It's great it has applications also including facebook so you can review your Facebook wall and comments using the radio.

Now heres where I fell in love. I can use my internet on my ipod touch and go to my squeezboxwebsite and log in and use the remote control option from my ipod touch to change the channel volume. I also can access music on my itunes library using the squeezebox server and listen to music stored on my laptop from anyplace in the house. again I can do this from the squeezebox webpage using my ipod touch. So eventhough it doesnt come with a remote. You wont need one if you have an ipod touch.

You can also plug the ipod to the system but why bother when you can access all the music from the radio via the server.

I love my squeezebox. I still want a speaker system for my ipod but this was a great stumble upon and now im in no rush to get the speakers since I have a world of free music at my command on the squeezebox radio. Cant imagine life without it.

I could be the last person to discover the advantages of a universal remote control. Technology is way past where I thought it was.

We recently purchased a home theatre system, and faced fumbling with five remotes. Typically, we were using a minimum of two remotes to control the cable box and audio receiver, because the cable box remote refused to play nice with the Onkyo audio system (a well known problem). So after a couple of weeks of fumbling remotes as a channel surfer, I began to look into universal remotes. Despite the fairly high price even when on a good sale, the strong positive reviews convinced me on the Harmony One. I am not sorry; I am very impressed with it. The software utility was straightforward to use and well organized. Just to see if the hype about set up was as good as advertised, I had my wife set up the remote with me looking over her shoulder. Normally, I end up with set up tasks like this, so she is not used to futzing with hardware and software. Set up went smoothly and took about a half hour. She had no trouble understanding what was being asked. The only prompting I supplied was to provide all the device information on our five components, and tell her that for all Activities, we wanted the receiver to control audio. Even our nine year old Panasonic VCR was in the Logitech device database. Ergonomically the One just seems to fit right in your hand. There is an accelerometer built into it, so that a little shake or fast pick up, lights up the screen and the keys. The touch screen is very sensitive as shipped, but you can adjust the sensitivity if it bothers you. The default key assignments for the devices for all our equipment, including the cable box, was clearly well thought out by Logitech. They just make ergonomic and convenience sense, which made playing with key re-assignments unnecessary.

I bought my VUDU Box over Christmas when it was on sale. I had been looking into buying one for some time and decided to strike at this opportunity. I am incredibly frugal when it comes to new technology and I never buy anything without researching it first and pouring over the reviews. Most of the reviews I read for VUDU were polarizing: people either loved the box or they hated it. Very few fell into the middle. I decided I would give the box a try and see how I felt about it, and return it if I didn't like it. That was 4 months ago.

I agree with what most of the reviews here are saying. The quality of the box is top notch. The user interface is great and easy to use. Set up is quick and easy and can be done with 3 cables (In my case power, Ethernet, and HDMI). I think it is important to say that I do not have a huge home theater. The box is simply connected to my television (an older model HD). Not to say that the box isn't easily connected to massive home theater systems, just read some reviews on here or look at the outputs on the back of the box (it has almost every output imaginable). The point being that the box will work in your simple living room or in a big home theater. Anyways, setting it up was simple like I said: plug it in, confirm that the remote is working and that you can hear sound, watch the box download the latest titles, and finally link the box to your account. You have to do this on your computer, but it takes less than 5 minutes. You'll be glad you have the account online later as it makes managing movies simple.

Quality of the movies on the VUDU Box is outstanding. This is one aspect that almost every review agreed on, and I will also agree with. The first movie I watched on the box was The Dark Knight in HD. After selecting the movie and confirming that you want to rent it, the movie will begin to play. There was no delay for the entire movie and it looked great the entire time. I've never considered myself a video junkie, but even I can tell the difference between watching a movie on VUDU and watching a DVD or a movie on HBO or OnDemand. Everything on VUDU is clearer and just looks better. This isn't just new releases either. Take for example the classic film Heavyweights which I have watched on cable countless times. When I found this gem on VUDU I had to rent it. There is no reason a movie such as Heavyweights should look so good, but on VUDU it does. It's the added attention to every movie that makes me really appreciate the box.

This is the difference that I have noticed with VUDU compared to other streaming boxes. Because almost every box is locked into the same pricing structure, you will consistently get the same prices from box to box. However, VUDU gives you more for that price in terms of quality. You could rent a movie on Netflix or Amazon and watch it as if it was on cable, but what is the fun in that? The reason you buy the streaming box is to break away from mediocre looking movies. VUDU hits it out of the park in this category.

Now, why is the VUDU the hardest working box in the business?

First off quality. Standard definition movies are higher quality than normal standard definition. High definition looks way better than normal HD. Finally, HDX looks better than any other streaming medium you can find. No other box is offering movies in 1080p at 24fps. VUDU is offering a ton, and they don't cost any more than HD.

Second, selection. VUDU currently has over 13,000 titles in the library. Over 1,300 of these are in HD. I've consistently been able to find obscure movies that I haven't seen forever, as well as those that are coming out as new releases. New movies are added weekly both as rentals and as purchases. I've been able to find any movie that is available on my friend's Xbox with Netflix streaming on VUDU and oh, that's right, in higher quality.

Third, features. I have never seen a more comprehensive search feature than the one on the VUDU Box. This doesn't mean it is intimidating. You can do a simple search just by title or director/actor. You'll probably be able to find your movie this way. Or you can browse through genre (and add other genre's to the mix in case you are looking for say a Horror-Comedy-Western) or even search by year and critic's rating. VUDU Labs is another nice feature with access to YouTube and Pandora, as well as other online services. Though, I admit I use YouTube and Pandora the most. VUDU makes use of the HD feature of YouTube so the videos look pretty good on a bigger television. Pandora brings your stations to the television and I have found it is great to put on for background music.

Lastly, I don't know what to call this but it is the ability of VUDU to be first at everything and provide the best experience. It feels good knowing that VUDU is consistently delivering on their basic premise of instant high quality movies as well as constantly adding and improving the service. It's been almost two years I believe since VUDU introduced their box, and tons of competition has popped up. Yet nobody is delivering an experience as unique as VUDU, and they all seem to be one step behind what VUDU is doing.

This is why VUDU is the hardest working box in the business. They could have stopped with simply delivering movies but they kept going with quality, new features, selection, and the best experience amongst the competition. Why would they slow down now? I would find it hard to give the VUDU Box anything but a perfect rating because for this kind of technology (streaming movie boxes) they are the best right now.

Although some folks have been able to set this unit up as a standalone system, its intended use is as an extra "receiver" (speaker driver) for the Squeezebox Duet system, which is a bundle of a Squeezebox Controller and a Squeezebox Receiver. That's the system I have.

Since my original system is working well, I did not want the auxiliary unit to disrupt things. I did want the capability to play different program material in two different rooms, or to synchronize the program stream on occasion.

The SB Receiver works admirably along this line. I removed it from Logitech's elegant package, connected it to sound outputs and power, and watched it configure itself to my WPA2-protected network in about one minute. No sweat! Since network passwords are stored in the SB Controller, I did not have to go through the tiresome routine of entering the password using the vertical scroll-wheel method.

I gave the SB Receiver a new name using the Squeezebox Server software, which at v 7.4.1 is working very well on my ReadyNAS Duo network attached storage device, and all was ready to go.

The SB Receiver is located in our living room, which is a bit constrained for space. We wanted to put neither the cash nor the space toward a full stereo receiver setup in this room, so we purchased the Z-2300 powered speaker system, also by Logitech.

Although this is most often used as a computer speaker system, it is THX-certified, and includes a large (and heavy!) subwoofer control unit. Paired with the SB Receiver, it provides deep and rich sound in our room, and cannot be turned up all the way without hurting our ears! The SB Receiver feeds a clean signal to the speakers using the standard RCA left/right outputs (its twin in the other room is using the digital optical output, and it is hard to distinguish the difference between the two).

The only issue I've so far encountered with adding a second unit is that it complicates the Controller interface just a bit. There is no one-button shortcut to switch between receivers; one scrolls and selects, iPod style. This becomes, again, tedious when performing such operations as synching/desynching receivers. It's more of a Controller issue, though, and does not detract from the performance of the SB Receiver itself, which is responsive and clean.

In truth, this is something that would have barely worked at all five years ago, and it is impressive that a wireless product like this can perform without interruption, and even carry multiple program streams, with so few problems. I recommend it highly.

Sonos Controller CR100 Review

I have two CR100 controllers in heavy use for almost 2 years now. From that experience, I can say that they are solid and hold up flawlessly. I don't remember ever having to reboot. Personally I think that the size and weight are a plus for this purpose. The CR100 is well-designed: It does an excellent job controlling the sonos system. I like that it wakes up just by shaking it. On the downside: screen is mediocre quality and does not show full album and track names, searching large music libraries (e.g. Rhapsody) can be a challenge. Battery life is so-so, but good enough. And when compared to an Iphone or an Ipod, the CR-100 feels like a Chevrolet Lumina next to a Porsche: old-fashioned, clumsy, and looks a bit cheap for 9. But it does the job. The CR100 is at least 2x too expensive for what it contains. I'm waiting to an iphone app to control sonos. Technically that is possible and I would be willing to pay for that.

Update October 2008:
One of my CR-100 died spontaneously last week. This is disappointing: a product at
this price point simply should not die within 3 years of purchase. Since it was
out-of-warranty, Sonos replaced it by a new one for 0. Sonos tech support is
excellent and fast, but I have mixed feelings having to pay 0 to replace a faulty product.

Update November 2008:
The Iphone Sonos app is out! This totally obsoletes the CR-100, since the Iphone
with a brilliant touch screen is so much easier to use than the CR-100. Sonos did a great job
in designing this app: it is nearly flawless. Searching for music is much easier
using the keyboard interface than with the click-wheel of the CR-100.
And... its free. I expect Sonos to discontinue
the CR100 soon, since a 0 Ipod touch or a 0 Iphone does a much better job
at it than the 0 CR100. From any angle, the iphone is far superior.

Logitech Harmony One Advanced Universal Remote Review

In a recent moment of whimsy, I decided that I needed to improve my TV / video experience - move to a 1080 TV and blue-ray player. To try to make order out of chaos, I added a Logitech Harmony One. My computer runs Windows 7 64 bit and after inserting the setup disk into the computer, I received a warning about incompatibility. ( see the end of this review for why I'm now giving 5 stars). Pushing on and ignoring this, I was ultimately able to set up the Harmony One but at a price of an exceedingly long time to set this up. It was also punctuated by the need to resend information back and forth to Logitech. Finally after setting everything up, one connects the Harmony One to your computer via a USB cable. I had to do this a number of times to get the information from the computer to the remote.

For those of you who have not used this device, Logitech keeps a data base of current and older devices on their server. You might start with a TV, the program asks whose brand and model number. This is sent to Logitech and the correct controls are then set back to the program in your computer. The program then ask how you watch TV: directly, through a cable box etc and then asks how you set the TV to watch a program. Do you need to go to an HDMI port and which one? Once you have done this, you move on to your cable box and go through the same process: brand and model and then on to your DVD player and or VCR. The program then asks the same sort of questions: brand and model number and how you need to set your TV ( the input for the TV) to watch these programs.

This process took an inordinate amount of time. Initially I had the wrong brand for my cable box and correcting that took almost an hour, while the initial setup took about 30 minutes. The connection to the remote and the download needed to be done several times with the need to continually resend information.

Once all this was done, the remote works flawlessly and is a real joy to use. I cannot comment on reliability as the unit is too new.

After doing all this I called Logitech support and there is a new version of the software compatible with Windows 7. As all my settings are correct, I played with the settings and they work much better on the computer - the lag period and constant reloading is now gone. It would have been nice to know this initially.
